Buddha Quotes

The following are inspirational Buddha quotes and stories on mindfulness, karma, nirvana, happiness, and just letting go.

"Don't blindly believe what I say. Don't believe me because others convince you of my words.

Don't believe anything you see, read, or hear from others, whether of authority, religious teachers or texts."

"Don't rely on logic alone, nor speculation. Don't infer or be deceived by appearances."

"Do not give up your authority and follow blindly the will of others. This way will lead to only delusion."

"Find out for yourself what is truth, what is real. Discover that there are virtuous things and there are non-virtuous things. Once you have discovered for yourself give up the bad and embrace the good."

~ The Buddha

Mindfulness

"When I was a young man, near the beginning of my life, I looked around with true mindfulness and saw that all things are subject to decay."

"Thus all things are subject to death, sorrow and suffering. I became aware that I too was of the same nature, the nature of beginning and end.  What if I searched for that which underlies all creation, that which is nirvana, the perfect freedom from unconditioned existence?"

"After much seeking for truth and knowledge the profoundness of reality came to me with a clarity never before known."

"I knew that most people never see this reality because they attach to the material aspect of the world. Illusions of self and other fill their vision. I also realized there are those with little dust limiting their vision."

Empowering Buddha Quotes

Buddha & The Brahman

A Brahman, of the high caste, saw the Buddha meditating by the River. Seeing the sage engaged and uplifted in his manner, the Brahman became curious.

"What caste are you? Asked the Brahman.

"Brahman, caste is irrelevant," said the Buddha.

"How so," said the Brahman, "surely you would agree that the highest caste is of considerable value whereas, the low caste peasantry are not?"

"Caste and riches matter not," replied the Buddha, "it is one's conduct that matters."

"How so," said the Brahman.

"In that fire comes from any type of wood so can a wise person come from any caste. It is through the knowing of truth that one becomes noble not through caste. The noble one is the one that doesn't cling to unworthy attachments. The noble one realizes the true way that things are, he no longer thinks of himself as a conditioned self and thus has gained clarity."

The Brahman immediately saw the truth in the Buddha's words.

"Sir, you are truly wise," said the Brahman, "truly wise".

I am Awake

A Brahman saw the Buddha resting under a tree in meditation. The Brahman was impressed with the Buddha's disposition and demeanor.

He asked, "Are you a god?"

"No, Brahman, I'm not a god."

"Are you an angel?"

"No", replied the Buddha.

"You must be a spirit then?"

"No, I'm not a spirit," said the Buddha.

"Then what are you?"

"I'm awake."
